Month in Review: March

All in the Family

I’m going to warn you now: this is a long post filled with various thoughts and memories made in this past month! It is sort of like looking through a couple of pages of my scrapbook that I have never made!

I haven’t been able to post near as often because of all of the extra-curricular (or wait what do you call it when it is outside of work not school?) activities I have been doing! But here goes:

Wow these sure have been some crazy weeks. There have been good days, slow days, hot days and cold days. Nothing has been consistent except for the lack of consistency that is. But oddly enough, nothing has happened or not happened that I would want to complain about. Well it hasn’t rained as much as I would like but I’ve learned that no amount of complaining about rain will make it rain. Praying is about all you can do to help your chances with that.

March has been a fun month indeed. A quick one too! I had a wedding to start the month off for one of my old college buddies. So, so much fun getting together with my friends that I hadn’t seen in way too long. Lots of dancing, drinking and story-telling. And a trip to IHOP. That’s never bad!

Then the very next week, I took advantage of my right to vote, in the Texas primaries. However, I wonder if it is just mere coincidence that Election Day falls on Fat Tuesday?!?!? Needless to say I took advantage of my right to party as well with Trivia Night at the Flying Saucer. Enjoyed some Louisiana beers to commemorate the night. My favorite by far being the Abita Macchiato Espresso Milk Stout. Highly recommend to anyone that may enjoy the occasional darkest of dark kinds of beers now and then.

After any night of fun, the next morning comes way too soon. But after a night of too much fun on Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday morning mass takes that to an extreme! But being dedicated as I may be, coupled with not wanting to endure the crowds at evening masses, I hopped out of bed at 5, showered and rushed to get to church at 6:30. Nothing like church that early in the morning though. There is a fresh feeling I just can’t explain. Maybe it is also the wonderful feeling you have, when you go out of your normal routine to enrich your faith. Either way great night and better morning to follow. Tradition to continue, I am sure.

And you’d think I would be done for the month or at least week after all of the events I have accounted to you so far. But you can’t overlook First Friday! This month my girlfriends and I checked out Feast. What a culture shift from the usual San Antonio restaurant scene. But a neat one at that. Their menu consists of various plate options in which you and your friends order a handful of different plates and share with each other. It is a bit more pricey than other establishments; however, sitting out on their patio on a nice evening makes it more than worth it. Just imagine all of the people-watching I was able to do on First Friday at a table right off of the sidewalk? We had the dishes highlighted in pink (Marinated Calamari, Brussel Sprouts, Grilled Lamb Belly, Duck Breast Tostadas and House Made Potato Chips).

House Made Potato Chips with Nutella-Olive Oil Sauce…

Grilled Lamb Belly definitely my favorite! But I just had to post a picture of the potato chips. They were odd. That’s the only way I could possibly describe them. It was one of those dishes that was weird but you couldn’t stop eating it. It kept us tasting it over and over, trying to decide why we loved it or hated it. Weird. Then we ventured on over to Beethoven Halle und Garten. Cool place that charges cover but it all goes toward a good cause. Or at least that is what I think they told me…

Then it was a pretty quiet week while the rest of my sisters were on Spring Break. You think they came and visited me at work? Nope. Guess they would rather sit on their bums than come show their support for their working sister ;) Just kidding I really don’t blame them and I had a wonderful weekend with them as detailed in my post.

To end that weekend I made an apple dump cake (recipe post to follow) and homemade ice cream for one of the birthday of one of the in my department. Another laid back week it was. Very productive, yet lacked the excitement that I was treated to at the beginning of the month. Of course some Irish beer was drank in honor of St. Patty’s day but other than that nothing too applaud-worthy. I guess I can’t expect firecrackers and pyrotechnics all of the time!

Martini Ball CrewBut to round out the month, I attended the Martini Ball at the Witte Museum with some of my friends. Who doesn’t love getting all dolled up for no particular reason other than some event, which you have no idea what is for? Needless to say free champagne got me in the door.

After we had all of the free drinks we could get, we mosey-ed on over to Sam’s Burger Joint for a Max Stalling concert. If you haven’t heard of him, his music is worth a try. Laid back Texas Country music that you can rely on. My favorite and probably one of his more famous songs being “Running Buddy”:

The following day after those festivities my sister’s softball team, The Rockettes, had their first softball game. Kymber and Dad had asked me awhile back to help coach. Of course I said yes! We’ve been practicing a couple of times a week since February, and we were all ready to see what we could do come game time.

The picture to top this post was of Kymber, Dad and I after the game. We won. Actually we kicked butt. 15-0 after 3 innings, in which the run-rule comes into effect. Monday we had another game. It was much better competition. We ended up winning 11-5 but it felt much closer until we opened it up at the end of the game. All in all, I am so very happy for everyone on the team. I know I am not too many years removed from all that sort of fun but with work it is easy to forget this!

Sorry for such a long post but I just wanted to share with you all of the excitement of March. Can’t believe we are almost a quarter of the way through 2014. Time really does go by even faster once you are out of school!

Hope everyone has a good one!
