Someone once said, “A grandfather is someone with silver in his hair and gold in his heart.”
Eighty-four years young, and my grandpa embodies that statement to a T. If you ever wonder how I got my affinity for old country music, paperback westerns and sawdust covered dance floors, look no further than Gramps.
The love he shows to all around him is admirable. So much to look up to.
A dancing machine.
He can stay up way longer than me, or you I’d bet. No better way to spend an evening than around the kitchen table with Grandpa, Grandma and the rest of the bunch. Sharing drinks, songs and laughter. Dancing ‘cross the kitchen floor is inevitable.
One of my favorite times was when Grandpa and Grandma came up to College Station for the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course. On the last night of the conference, Wednesday, they decided to head out to Hurricane Harry’s dance hall with me for a weeknight of dancing. They were a hit! Everyone in the place was wanting to know who this adorable couple was that stood out from the crowd. It has never been a dull moment around them.
Spending the night at their house was always filled with the promise of more laughter, games of pitch, milkshakes and Blue Bell ice cream, a good breakfast, and always an adventure.
Sometimes I hear people categorize others as either a Daddy’s girl or a Momma’s girl. Well I think my parents may say I’m more of a Grandpa’s girl more than anything. Ever since I could remember, I’ve always considered my Grandpa one of the best around. He could hardly do any wrong. I didn’t believe any of the stories of shenanigans he apparently partook of in his younger days. That is until he admitted to them! But even still, he rarely can do no wrong. That is unless he’s playing against me in a game of pitch!
Happy birthday Gramps! Looking forward to many more with you :)
P.S. you’re reading this on July 14th, if you follow the blog. His birthday was yesterday, but rather than get this posted in a timely fashion, we decided to go spend the evening up at their house. What a party it was, as always. Again, I couldn’t be more blessed to have the grandparents I have. Y’all have always been an integral part of my life. I know all of my sisters and cousins would agree!
Do you have a favorite story about my Grandpa or any of my grandparents for that matter? I’d love to hear them. Comment below or email me at email@example.com. In the future I’d love to share them in a post!
